Baripada: At least five people were killed and 25 injured, six of them critically, when a van carrying them dashed against an electric pole in Mayurbhanj district on Saturday night.

The mishap took place near Jhaladunguri on Rairangpur-Jashipur Road under Badampahad police station, about 100 km from here, when the vehicle turned turtle after hitting the pole, police said.

The victims, hailing from Durudura, were returning to their village after attending "Goru Khunta", a local festival observed after Diwali, at Pasana village when the accident occurred.

The injured were admitted to the sub-divisional headquarters hospital at Rairangpur where the condition of six persons was stated to be critical.
