Berhampur: At least five excise officials were injured in a mob attack at Rajapur in Ganjam district on Tuesday.

Nine officials of the intelligence wing had gone to Pudamari-Rajapur villages to unearth a ganja smuggling racket when they faced the ire of villagers.

"The villagers attacked our personnel when they were standing near the village," Superintendent of Excise, Ganjam, B N Dhal said.

The officials were attacked when they caught a person allegedly involved in smuggling of ganja, while another youth accompanying him fled and informed the locals, an excise official said.

While five of them were injured, villagers also allegedly abducted two excise officials, but they were rescued by police later.

The injured have been admitted to MKCG Medical College and Hospital here.

"The situation in the village is normal. No arrest has been made yet," Inspector-in-charge Patapur, K C Sethi, said.
