Bhubaneswar: At least 368 women and girls were gang-raped in the last five years in Odisha while total number of rape cases registered in different police stations in the state were 5,238.
 
This was revealed by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik while replying to a written question in the Assembly on Monday.
 
The incidents, including gang-rapes, were reported between 2008 and 2012, he said.
 
However, Patnaik who is also in charge of the Home Department mentioned in the reply that 6,036 persons were arrested and forwarded to courts in connection with rape cases during the period.
 
While the police have submitted charge sheets in 3,798 cases against the accused persons, 1,808 cases were still under investigation, he said, adding that the state government was bearing medical expenses of the victims and providing financial assistance to their families in certain cases.
 
On the gang-rape cases, the Chief Minister informed the Assembly that 81 such cases were registred in 2008 followed by 51 in 2009, 54 in 2010, 93 in 2011 and 89 in 2012.
