Berhampur: Acting on a tip-off, the district police seized a huge cache of arms and ammunition including SLR rifles and live cartridges during a joint combing operation with the Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) from Khalisaru forest under Sorada police limits of the district yesterday.

After the operation three SLR rifles, 793 live cartridges, 19 magazines of SLR and 9 Insas magazines were seized from the area, Narasingha Bhola, SP of Ganjam told mediapersons.

“We are expecting more such arms must be hidden in other places of that area. In the coming days, the joint operation would be intensified,” he added.

The joint combing operation was done in Gajalbadi areas for 12 hours from 10 am to 10 pm on Saturday. The search was done in the forest areas on the basis of information that arms and magazines were dumped in the area for hiding them from the security personnel’s vigil, Bhola added.

Sources said police is suspecting the seized arms and ammunition might be the looted items from Nayagarh armoury.

“We will probe on how such number of arms and ammunition was hidden in the forest,” the SP added.
