Kendrapara: Three persons were taken into custody today for allegedly forcing a deranged woman to take dip for an hour in a pond that led to her death at Mahakalpada in Kendrapara district.

"Driven by superstition and orders of a local godman, they forced 44-year-old Kalyani Mirdha to take dip in a pond for an hour on Saturday. Later, she died of severe cold and pneumonia," Sub-divisional Police Officer (SDPO) Nrusingha Charan Swain said.

They inflicted the torture on Mridha on the advice of a self-styled godman who said that the woman would be cured, he said. Mirdha was rushed to a local hospital after she fell unconscious following repeated dips in the pond.

The godman, Mirdha`s husband and a dozen other villagers who made her dip in the pond have fled from the village, Swain said.
