Bhubaneswar:There is no dearth of committees nor suggestions and proposals to control poaching and killing of elephants in the Similipal Sanctuary in Mayurbhanj district. But no amount of effort on pen and paper has been sufficient to create fear among the poachers. On Friday, the carcasses of three dead elephants weer recovered while it is feared that two others have most likely become victims of the greed of the poachers,

On a single day, highly decomposed dead bodies of three elephants were spotted inside the core area of Similipal forests. The tusk of a male elephant was missing making it apparent that it was targeted for its ivory value. Forest officials with scientific teams have started investigations. It is feared that the three animals died after drinking water from a pond near village Kanthikana under Ektali panchayat. The pond water was poisoned by the poachers, it is alleged.

Last year, there was lots of hue and cry after cases of 12 elephants were detected. Some had been poisoned to death. While some others were killed by poachers and a few due to electrocution. The National Tiger Conservation Authority(NTCA) had constituted a two-member committee to draft proposals on elephant conservation and protection. The committee had made 25 suggestions. These included action against forest officials, creation of special monitoring committee, establishment of special intelligence wings, massive drive against gun-runners and non-utilisation of funds meant for elephant security for other purposes and to create awareness among the locals. But everything has come to a naught, Elephants poaching continues unabated Similipal Sanctuary.
