Dhenkanal: Three persons died after consuming brew in Dhenkanal district on Friday, police said.

The three, from Panigengutia village under Parjang police station area, were suspected to have consumed the concoction made by mixing date palm juice with chemical substance or some tablet for stronger effect, a senior police officer said.

"We are enquiring as to whether the owner of the tree had mixed any chemical substance in the brew or the collection source of the brew was poisoned by any snake, or they had taken some tablet for a kick," Superintendent of Police Satish Gajvayee said.

The date palm owner was among the trio.

The three - Maharga Nayak (35), Nanda Nayak (60) and Binayak Nayak (50) - were taken to the community health centre at Parjang in an unconscious state where they were declared brought dead.

Senior officials including the district Excise Superintendent and local `tehsildar` went to the area.
