Balasore: Police today detained three persons from Sahadevkhunta bus stand in Balasore after they were caught while allegedly trying to circulate fake currency notes in the district.

Sources said the trio- Hafeez Anwar, Sakil Qazi and Ibrar Qazi hails from neighbouring Jharkhand while police also seized five Rs 100 fake currency notes from their possession.

According to sources, the three were near the bus stand on their way to Remuna & travelling in an auto-rickshaw and it was then that the matter came to light.

Reportedly, the rickshaw driver on suspicion that the notes exchanged with him were fake, immediately raised an alarm following which locals gathered at the spot.

“They collected some notes from Ghanipur area and were circulating the fake notes here by giving the notes to the auto drivers. The driver suspected on the genuineness of such notes and later called up the police," said another auto driver.

However, the detained persons refuted the charges of fake note circulation stating that they were going to Remuna for fund collection.

Sources said all three were handed over to the Sahadevkhunta police who have initiated a probe into the incident to elicit more information.

“An investigation is on and the notes that have been seized will be sent to Bhubaneswar RBI to clarify whether they are genuine or not,” said a police official.
