Konark: With a motive to promote wholesome surf culture in India, the three-day long India Surf Festival kick started at Puri-Konark marine drive beach on Friday.

At least 48 surfers including 32 foreigners took part in the grand competition inaugurated at the Lotus resort near Ramachandi-Chandrabhaga beach.

“Children from different parts of the country gather here to enjoy the new kind of sports. We are expecting more and more participants this year”, said Sanjay Samantaray, Convener of India Surf Festival.

According to sources, the festival which aims at taking water sports to a new level through SUP (Stand up Paddle) as a sustainable alternative towards building an eco-friendly adventure is organized by Orissa Tourism Development Corporation Ltd for the second time. The festival will continue till January 27, sources added.

“A lot of people are getting into adventure sports like surfing as it connects you with the nature,” a Mumbai-based surfer Rahul said.

The competition will include categories of Stand Up Paddle, Kite surfing and Boat surfing.

On the eve of the festival, the young surfers are found cleaning the beach as a symbol of awareness.

“We have a relationship with the nature. So in order to enjoy our sports, we need a clean environment. Since we are here for the first time, we are cleaning the beach and forest to use the ISF space”, said Jill Forgusson, a surfer from US.
