Bhubaneswar/Konark: The Konark Natya Mandap on Saturday witnessed a colourful evening as the 23rd Konark Festival kicked off with the performances of some eminent dancers and their troupes depicting the mythological tales of the state.

The magical evening commenced with the rendition of Odissi danseuse Madhavi Mudgal from Gandharv Mohavidyalaya, New Delhi who performed Mangalacharan invoking the blessings of Goddess Ganga followed by Pallavi highlighting the pure dance aspects.

“We have always performed in auditoriums. But performing in this kind of atmosphere was altogether a different experience, especially in Konark as Odissi dance and Konark is intensely linked,” said Mudgal.

The act was followed by the graceful dance moves by renowned Kuchipudi dancers Dr Raja and Dr Radha Reddy who mesmerised the audience by performing Devi Stutee, Natya Tarangini and Nava Taruni.

“I enjoyed the dance very much and other musicians as well. Today is a very special occasion to look at the beauty of the temple as backdrop. It’s a unique festival and I am lucky to be here”, said Andrew, an audience.

The five day-long festival organized by the tourism department of Odisha government will continue till December 5 providing opportunities to the dancers to showcase their talent.
