Malkangiri: The spell of Maoist sympathizers shunning violence and joining mainstream continued on Saturday when 19 naxal sympathizers surrendered before Malkangiri SDPO Madkar Sandip Sampad.

Among the people who laid down arms, five were militias, three Village Committee members and two members of Chetana Natya Mandali. They were members of Darwa division of the outlawed CPI(Maoist) and are residents of Khatopadar village under Katranapalli panchayat.

Talking to media persons, the Malkangiri SDPO said, “We welcome the 19 people. The government will make arrangements for them under the surrender and rehabilitation policy.”

He also urged other villagers to quit violence and join the mainstream for the sake of the better future of their as well as their offsprings.

Notably, on Friday, 19 Maoist sympathisers had surrendered before Malkangiri SP Mitrabhanu Mohapatra at the district headquarters whereas a woman cadre Maoist Sushanti alias Muli Munda had laid arms before the Bonai Additional SP in Sundargarh district.
