Bhubaneswar: About 150 students fell ill after they took iron tablets at a government school in Gopinathpur village of Puri district.

The students were rushed to a nearby hospital at Nuagaon after they complained of stomach ache, nausea and vomiting. However, some of them were shifted to the Puri Sadar Hospital in critical condition.

Sources said the students were given iron tablets prior to mid-day meal at the school. The tablets were given by Block Extension Educator (BEE) of Chilika-Nuapada Community Health Centre.

After receiving the information, district collector and other officials reached the hospital and asked the doctors about the condition of admitted students. Brahmagiri MLA Sanjay Das Burma and senior Congress leader Lalatendu Bidhyadhara Mohapatra also visited the sick students.

"The samples of iron tablets have been collected and will be dispatched for laboratory test. A probe would be carried out to ascertain why the children were not served mid-day meal prior to iron tablets," said Nabakumar Nayak, Collector, Puri.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik directed the Puri district collector to probe the matter and submit a report. The state government has also announced that it will bear medical expenses of hospitalised students.
