According to family, the deceased, 24-year-old Chaturbhuj Das, drank poison after learning that the girl no longer wished to pursue their relationship and marry him.

14 Years of Love Ends in Rejection

Chaturbhuj, son of Ramakanta Das, had been in a relationship with a girl from the same village for over 14 years. His family said he had supported her education, even putting his own career on hold, and bore her study expenses until she secured a teaching post at a high school.

However, after getting the job, the girl allegedly distanced herself and rejected the idea of marriage. The family claims this sudden withdrawal pushed the boy into deep emotional distress.

Suicide Attempt and Hospitalisation

Unable to bear the rejection, Chaturbhuj allegedly consumed poison. He was rescued in a critical state and taken to Madhuban CHC, later shifted to SCB Medical College, Cuttack, and then to a private hospital in Bhubaneswar. Despite treatment, he succumbed.

“Please give my son justice. He has been wronged. For the past 15 years, the girl from our village was in love with my son. But after securing a job in a high school, she rejected his marriage proposal,” said the deceased youth’s mother, expressing her grief.

“We repeatedly told him not to react in this manner, but he insisted that he would marry only that girl. She too had earlier said she would marry him, and both had mutually agreed. I even told him that we would arrange their engagement in December and later conduct the wedding. But suddenly, an argument broke out between them, during which the girl said she would not marry him and criticised him for doing incense (dhupa) business, calling him a bad man. After hearing those words, my son lost hope and consumed poison,” said Ramakanta Das, the deceased man’s father.

Family Files Police Complaint

Chaturbhuj’s father has lodged a complaint alleging that the girl and her family mentally harassed and emotionally manipulated him, forcing him into suicide. Police say the truth will emerge after a full investigation.

Conclusion

Earlier today, villagers held a candle march seeking justice and peace for Chaturbhuj’s soul, as the case now stands as a painful reminder of how emotional trauma can spiral into tragedy. Police continue to investigate to uncover the complete truth.
