Residents of Cuttack were gripped with panic on Saturday after a massive 12-foot gharial crocodile was spotted near the sandbed beneath the Madhusudan Setu (Madhusudan Bridge) over the Mahanadi River.
The sudden appearance of the enormous reptile created widespread alarm among locals, many of whom rushed to the bridge to witness the sight for themselves.
According to eyewitnesses, the crocodile was initially seen basking on a sandy patch within the riverbed. Word spread rapidly through nearby areas, drawing a large crowd onto the bridge as people tried to catch a glimpse of the creature from a safe distance.
Videos and photos shot by onlookers quickly circulated on social media, adding to the buzz and curiosity.

Forest department officials have been informed and are monitoring the situation. Preliminary reports suggest that the gharial might have drifted downstream from its natural habitat due to changes in water levels or increased river flow in recent days. Experts believe that while gharials are generally not aggressive toward humans, their presence so close to a populated city area poses potential risks.
Authorities have urged people not to venture close to the riverbank and to avoid disturbing the reptile. Signboards and cautionary notices are expected to be placed around the area to prevent accidents. The Forest Department is also assessing whether the crocodile needs to be safely relocated.
The sighting has left residents both anxious and fascinated, turning Madhusudan Setu into an unexpected viewing point as officials work to ensure public safety.
