Bhubaneswar: As many as 1112 women were allegedly raped while miscreants killed 12 victims after committing rape during 2011 followed by 1045 such incidents in 2010 in Odisha, the state assembly was informed today.

This was disclosed in the Odisha Assembly by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik who was also in-charge of the Home department. "Total number of crimes of atrocity against women has increased to 9659 in 2011 from 8918 such cases in 2010," he said replying a question.

While highest 76 rape cases were reported from tribal dominated Mayurbhanj district in northern parts of the state, Malkangiri in southern region recorded lowest 8 such incidents during 2011.

Mayurbhanj district tops the list of rape cases since a decade, an official statement said adding that highest of 90 rape cases were registered in the district in 2008.

The rape incidents were gradually increasing in the state, the statement said adding that while the total number of rape cases was 753 in 2000, it increased to 1112 in 2011.
