Sambalpur: In view of falling water level in the Hirakud Dam, as many as 10 gates of the reservoir have been closed today, informed the dam officials here on Tuesday. Currently floodwater is being released through 4 sluice gates of the reservoir.

While seven gates of the dam was already opened to release flood water, the dam authorities had on Monday opened seven more gates due to heavy downpours in upper catchment areas of Mahanadi river. The dam authorities are planning to maintain the water level in the reservour around 620 ft by August 21.

As per reports, more than 2.2 lakh cusecs water was being discharged from the dam through the 14 gates earlier today. Water level at the dam was reportedly 619.37ft by 7.00 am on today against its total storage capacity of 630 ft. Similarly, the water level was 619.45ft at 6 am with inflow of 96,836 Cusecs and outflow of 2,39,846 Cusecs. 

Besides, all the 11 gates of Mandira Dam situated near Rourkela were opened yesterday to release floodwater in Brahmani river. Residents living in low lying areas and downstream of the river were asked not to venture out into the river.
