Jajpur (Orissa): One person died while seven others were missing as a boat carrying them capsized in river Brahmani at Chandanpur ghat in Orissa`s Jajpur district today, police said.

The mishap occurred in mid-stream of the river this afternoon while about 35 villagers were on their way to visit a Durga puja pandal across the river in Ramchandrapur of Bari block.

One body has been recovered, they said adding that seven others are still missing. Twenty seven others swam to safety on the river bank.

"The passengers in the ill-fated country-boat were from Chandanpur, Mirzapur and Rampur villages," said Sarat Chandra Singh, Fire officer of Bari.

The deceased has been identified as Soumya Ranjan Biswal (23) of Chandanpur village.

Most of the missing persons belonged to flood-hit Chandanpur village.

"Search operation is on," Singh added.

"The boat has a capacity to ferry a maximum of 20 people. When so many people including women and children boarded it, I strongly resisted. But no one listened to me.

Finally the tragedy took place," said Bishnu Charan Behera, the boatman.
