Jajpur: A married woman, thrown off a bridge over River Birupa with her hands and feet tied, was rescued from the river bank near Benapur in Jajpur district, police said today.

The woman identified as Rebati Sahu (53) of Garagali village was rescued by police and fire brigade yesterday, police said. She was rushed to the local hospital and then shifted to SCB Medical College Hospital at Cuttack after her condition deteriorated, the sources said.

The woman received multiple injuries, police said adding some morning walkers saw the woman lying on the river bank and writhing in pain with her hands and feet tied with ropes.

Police said the woman alleged that her neighbour wanted to kill her as she was opposing the latter`s move to grab her property forcibly.

"On Thursday night I was sleeping on the verandah of my house. Three persons namely - Bhubana Sahu, Sanda Sahu and Sankar Sethy - forcibly lifted me and dumped me in a vehicle after stuffing my mouth with a piece of cloth. They beat me up. Before throwing me off the bridge, they had tied my hands and feet. They wanted to kill me as I was opposing their bid to grab my property," Rebati claimed.

Earlier, a 23-year-old pregnant woman was thrown off the Jobra Anicut bridge over Mahanadi river on May 8.
