Bhubaneswar: As per the latest forecast by Regional Meteorological Center, heavy rain is likely to occur in several parts of northern Odisha in the next 48 hours.
As the south-west monsoon has become active under the influence of a cyclonic storm, rainfall activity has increased in several parts of the State since last night.
Meanwhile, normal life was thrown out of gear following heavy rain that lashed several parts of the State on Wednesday.
Low-lying areas in Cuttack, Bhubaneswar, Rourkela and other parts of the State remained waterlogged.
People were seen wading through knee deep water at Roxy Lane, Stewart Patna and Badambadi areas in the Millennium City. As drains were not properly desilted, there were problems in discharge of excess rain water, alleged local residents.
“A total of 140 pumps have been installed in several places to drain out water and installation of two more high-powered pumps is underway. The situation is likely to be normal by this evening,” said District Collector Susant Mohapatra after a meeting with MLA, departmental heads and JICA, which is involved in the executing drainage and sanitation project in the Cuttack.
At least 10 wards of Rourkela were inundated following incessant rains since last evening.
Residents of several places of Balasore town including Nua Sahi, Postal Colony and Gudipadara also had a harrowing time due to acute waterlogging today.
The visitors also faced severe problems due to poor drainage system and waterlogging at Sun Temple in Konark.
Reacting to the issue, Archaeology Survey of India (ASI) Superintendent HA Nayak on the other hand informed that the accumulated water can only be released through motor pumps.
Nayak further informed an outlay of drainage system with an estimated at a cost of Rs 50 lakh has been sent for an approval of the ASI DG.
