Bhubaneswar: The three-member Vamsadhara Water Disputes Tribunal team which visited the Sara and Budigaon villages in Gajapati district to find out an amicable solution to the Vamsadhara water sharing dispute between Odisha and Andhra Pradesh, faced strong protest from the locals on Wednesday.

Residents of the villages staged a demonstration and asked the officials to take into consideration issues relating to drinking water and submergence of villages before taking a decision.

Tribunal chairman Justice Mukund Sharma along with other members of the tribunal – D.N. Chaturvedi and Gulam Mohammad visited several places, including Neradi, Katragadda, Kidigaon and Kasinagar to study the ground situation and hear the arguments of the two sides.

Odisha has been rejecting Andhra Pradesh Government’s plea for the construction of side weir near Battili of Bhamini mandal on the ground that it would alter the river’s course. It also objected construction of a barrage on Vamsadhara river near Neradi as the barrage will lead to drinking water problem and submergence of several villages.

The tribunal will submit its report after completing ground visits in both Andhra Pradesh and Odisha.
