Malkangiri: At least six students, including three girls, took ill during a hunger strike demanding return of a college hostel.

The district administration had evacuated the men`s hostel of Malkangiri College a few months ago for renovation. However, after the completion of the work, the building was turned into an orphanage for girls. In protest the students staged a rasta roko and hunger strike in front of the college gate from 8 a.m to 3 p.m during the day and then shifted the agitation to the collectorate.

A few of them took ill and fainted but the rest of them continued their agitation and insisted on a written assurance from the district collector Balwant Singh that hostel accommodation would be provided to them. Official sources said efforts are on to convince the students to withdraw the stir. The students who had fallen ill were rushed to the district hospital here where doctors said their condition had improved.
