Shelter home shame: Bankrolled by foreign funds, 25 such homes were operating illegally in Odisha

Dhenkanal: Making headway in the Dhenkanal shelter home sexual harassment case, Police have elicited vital information from arrested chief of Dream Centre Shelter Home, Fayaz Rahman.

According to sources, Fayaz alias ‘Daddy’ revealed that the head office of Good News India, which is the operator of the shelter homes, is in Salgaria, West Bengal and it received Rs 14 to Rs 15 crore as foreign donation. The amount was transferred directly through private bank from USA to West Bengal and then to Bhubaneswar.

Good News India has 25 branches in Odisha; however, only one is registered under the Societies Act & Juvenile Justice Act in the State.

According to police sources, Fayaz accepted that the organization opened shelter home across Odisha illegally based on the Good News India’s registration details.

Dhenkanal SP, Santosh Nayak said “The organisation utilizes around Rs 14 to Rs 15 crore for various works. They are registered under West Bengal Societies Registration Act and don’t have any registration in Odisha.”

Meanwhile, police have begun investigations into the allegations of religious conversions carried out in the shelter homes. Police suspects that the viral video of Daddy immersing girl inmates in water was shot in Salgaria. The police have decided to send a team to investigate about the same.

Meanwhile, the district administration has taken action to relocate the 81 inmates rescued from the Beltikiri shelter home in Dhenkanal.

The district collector said that some of the parents have taken back their children while other inmates have been shifted to local child care institutes and open shelter homes.

Dhenkanal Collector, Nikhil Pavan Kalyan said “We have moved the children to child care institutes and open shelter homes. We are providing them with all facilities and staying in regular touch with them. We have also started sending some children back to their parents.”

On the other hand, the police have taken Fayaz for another 2 days of remand to squeeze out more details from him. They have also interrogated the Beltikiri shelter home director, Simanchal Nayak in Dhenkanal jail.
