Malkangiri: About 40 BSF jawans and policemen on Monday had a narrow escape when a landmine planted by Maoists exploded during the clearance of a road blockade at Erakonda in Malkangiri district, police said.

The incident took place when the BSF jawans and district police personnel were removing trees felled by Maoists during a bandh called by them two days ago, Malkangiri Superintendent of Police Akhilesh Singh said.

The landmine exploded about 50 metres away from the spot where the security personnel were undertaking the operation to clear the road connecting Gomphagonda and Bejangwada, he said, adding that no one was injured in the incident.

Combing operations and patrolling by security forces have been intensified in the area. Two persons were detained, but later let off after questioning.

The landmine explosion came a day after armed Maoists burnt a heavy machine used for construction work and damaged materials in Kalimela area of the district.
