Bhubaneswar: Demanding full grant-in-aid and abolition of block grant, the School Teachers’ Federation of Odisha (STFO) on Thursday launched a civil disobedience agitation. Hundreds of teachers took out a rally from Master Canteen in Bhubaneswar and reached Lower PMG where they violated Section 144 and attempted to overcome police barricades. The teachers scuffled with the policemen. According to sources, some few teachers were injured in the process.

Sources said the agitating teachers attempted to force their way into the Assembly when they were blocked by the police, which led to a scuffle. Around 300 agitating teachers were taken into preventive custody by the police after which the situation normalized.

The teachers’ federation has accused the police of brutality, but police have refuted the charge.

“The government has repeatedly given us assurance, but has failed to take any action. There have been several protest and schools have also been closed in protest many a times. The government is trying to fool the teachers and is using police force to suppress our voices,” said an agitating teacher.

Notably, the teachers took to streets following the failure of the discussions with the government.
