Rourkela: Residents of Sundergarh district in western Odisha erupted in joy as Rourkela was chosen as one of the venues for the men’s hockey world cup in 2023.

Hockey players, sports enthusiasts and locals expressed happiness over the decision as they feel that it will put the limelight back on Sundergarh as the hockey hub in Odisha. Inmates of Panposh sports hostel also expressed similar excitement.

Speaking to OTV, hockey player, Priya Kujur said, “We are very happy that hockey world cup matches will be played here. Now we can watch international matches in Rourkela. Villagers will also enjoy the matches. We can learn a lot.”

Former international hockey player, Lazarus Barla said, “Excitement will be higher in Rourkela than Bhubaneswar. Seating capacity of 50,000 will not be enough. As infrastructure is not adequate, it will be a challenge for the administration.”
