Bhubaneswar: Even as water-level in almost all the rivers in Odisha are on the rise and are nearing the danger level, no threat of flood looms large over the State as the rainfall is set to abate from today.
But the water level in Mahanadi, Budhabalanga, Brahmani and Baitarani is likely to post a rise today as the Low Level Circulation (as shown in the pix) is stationed partly over north west Odisha. Moreover, the Low Pressure Area (LPA) is over Jharkhand now. As a consequence, Jharkhand will witness heavy rainfall during the next 24-hours. And rivers originating from there are set to receive good rainfall in their upstream.
As per the SRC's Flood Situation Report, rainfall has stopped in Bolangir, Subarnapur, Boudh and Kandhamal. However, incessant rain has been reported from Madanpur Rampur in Kalahandi.
The forecast by IMD and Skymet for today shows that heavy rainfall is predicted for all the three blocks in Deogarh and places adjoining it in districts like Sambalpur, Subarnapur and Angul. Skymet predictions show the rainfall amount will be in the range of over 150 mm. Moderate rainfall is also predicted for today in many places of Keonjhar and Mayurbhanj districts.
As per SRC-IMD flood bulletin, with the water level of Mahanadi at Khairmal (Boudh) now reading 105mm and nearing the danger level of 108mm, the release of flood water from Hirakud may lead to medium flood in the region.
Owing to rainfall predicted in Eastern ghats region, origin point of the Mahandi, for today, the inflow to Hirakud will maintain the current inflow of 86,390 cubic feet per second (cusecs) for the next 24-48 hours. This will lead to a rise in the reservoir level of Hirakud, which is currently at 616 ft against the FRL (Full Reservoir Level) of 630 ft. As a result, the live storage capacity in Hirakud stood at 52 per cent today. Reports show a rise in the reservoir level of all major reservoirs in the State.
According to the flood bulletin, the water level of 82.91 mt in Vansadhara river at Gunupur is only a slice below the warning level of 83mt. The rise has been attributed to extremely heavy rainfall in Kalahandi, the origin point, for last 36 hours.
