Bhubaneswar: Terming the NDA Government at the Centre and BJD dispensation in Odisha as "anti-people", Left parties today claimed that both are adopting policies aimed to benefit capitalists and corporates while jeopardising the interest of working class and farmers.
Dalits, minorities and intellectuals have come under attack during the Narendra Modi government, while over 200 farmers have committed suicide in Odisha as state government failed to mitigate their plight, top leaders of CPI, CPI-M, CPI (ML) Liberation, SUCI (Communist) and Forward Bloc said addressing a joint Left rally.
CPI General Secretary S Sudhakar Reddy said the BJP led ministry at the Centre was not only pro-capitalist but also anti-working class as it wanted to change labour laws in the interest of corporate houses.
He claimed that Modi Government also wanted to change the Land Acquisition Act to please foreign and domestic capitalists at the cost of farmers and common people.
Alleging that attacks on on dalits, minorities, intellectuals and students mounted after BJP came to power, Reddy said fundamentalists killed Dr Narendra Dabholkar, Govind Pansare and MM Kalburgi, who had raised voice against unscientific thoughts and communal poisoning of the society.
Even prestigious educational institutions like JNU and Hyderabad University were not spared, he alleged exhorting the Left parties to wage a battle against such anti-people policies of the government.
On Odisha, Reddy said more than 200 farmers have committed suicide in Odisha, but the state government is yet to come out with any special package to prevent the trend.
"People under Naveen Patanaik rule are reeling under poverty, hunger and deprivation as the state government is adopting anti-people and pro-capitalist policies," he claimed.
Stating that several disturbing developments are taking place, CPI(M) General Secretary Sitaram Yechury said interest rate on savings of small savings is slashed, while two persons in Jharkhand were killed while transporting cows.
Soon after Parliament adjourned, the prices of petrol and diesel were increased despite a down trend of crude oil prices in the international market, Yechury said.
This will further push the skyrocketing prices of all essential commodities, he said.
