Bhubaneswar: The Raksha Bandhan or Rakhi Poornima was celebrated across the state with much fervor and joy on Saturday.

This festive occasion celebrates the relationship between a brother and his sister.

As per Hindu tradition, the sister ties a rakhi or the sacred thread on her brother’s wrist and prays for his well-being. On the other hand, the brother vows to protect her lifelong. This symbolizes the unconditional love between the brother and sister.

On this auspicious day, students in the capital city also observed raksha bandhan in their schools with fun and enthusiasm.

Some students also tied rakhi to Governor Muralidhar Chandrakant Bhandare and Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik at Raj Bhawan and Naveen Niwas respectively.

The holy day was too observed by BJP Women’s Wing at the party’s office.

Rakhi Poornima was also celebrated in Jagannath Temple, Puri where Devi Subhadra tied the sacred thread on the wrist of her brothers- Balabhadra and Jagannath.

On behalf of the Devi, the “singhari” servitors, according to the temple’s customs, tied a red and yellow coloured rakhi to Lord Jagannath and a blue and violet coloured rakhi to Lord Balabhadra.

Though the ceremony shows a unique bond shared between the sister and brother, it also sends out a social message that everybody should live in harmonious coexistence with eachother.
