Sambalpur: Despite strict guidelines set by bodies like University Grants Commission (UGC) to stop ragging incidents across the country, the menace is yet to stop.
In one such incident at Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT) in Sambalpur of Odisha, one student has been penalised with a 'year back' for ragging 2nd year students while disciplinary action has been initiated against 19 other students.
As per the complaint filed, 2nd year students were allegedly harassed for 15 days. The juniors were instructed to bow down while passing seniors and were also ragged inside hostels, the complaint mentioned.
Things started to get worse in the last few days during which the hair of a student was forcibly chopped off.
"Such incidents of ragging are condemnable. Even though many students don't support it there are some unsocial elements," a student, Soumyaranjan Panda said.
On the other hand, the Vice-Chancellor of the university said that ragging will never be tolerated in the campus.
