Bhubaneswar: Expressing shock and anger over the alleged gang rape of a minor girl in Puri and the prime culprit being a former police constable, political parties have lashed out at the Odisha government citing its failure in curbing the ever-growing menace of crimes against women and minor girl children.
Demanding a CBI probe into the case, Leader of Opposition Pradipta Naik said, "With each passing day, the State is witnessing a steep rise in sexual assault cases. As there is involvement of police in the gang rape case in Puri, the probe will likely get derailed. CM Naveen, who is heading the Home department, should resign on moral grounds."
Echoing similar views, State BJP Mahila Morcha president Pravati Parida stated, "After allegations of dereliction of duty by police in Rairangpur Lecturer death case, a cop has been accused in the gang rape incident in Puri. If CM Naveen Patnaik does not give an explanation, we will personally meet and seek answers from him in this regard."
On the other hand, hundreds of NSUI activists were today taken into preventive custody by police while they were en route to gherao Naveen Niwas protesting the gang rape incident.
With such cases on an alarming rise in the country, public demand for enforcement of stricter laws and exemplary action on crimes against women has also grown louder.
