Bhubaneswar: Days after its beach was tagged as the second-most cleanest in the country, pilgrim city Puri has added another feather to its cap. On Sunday, the district administration won the Swachhata Darpan Award from the Department of Drinking Water and Sanitation (DDWS) under Ministry of Jal Shakti & SBM Grameen for adopting innovative methods in plastic waste management to keep the environment pollution-free.
Bollywood actor and founder of Paani Foundation, Aamir Khan presented the award during a national-level workshop organised by ODF Sustainability in New Delhi.
Additional Executive Officer of Puri Municipality, Saroj Kumar received the award on behalf of the district administration.
The campaign to make Puri 100 per cent free from the use of plastic kicked-off on Gandhi Jayanti last year and is being spearheaded by district Collector Balwant Singh.
The write-up and presentation prepared by the Puri District Rural Development Agency (DRDA) was also highly praised at the workshop.
Meanwhile, office of Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik (CMO) took to twitter and stated, “Effective management of plastic waste by adopting innovative methods has earned Puri the National Award for Plastic Waste Management. Recognition by Centre will further encourage single-use plastic management in the state.”
Recently, a research conducted by National Centre for Coastal Research claimed Puri sea beach is one among the cleanest beaches in the country.
