(image) Bhubaneswar: With the new tariff rates effective from April 1, the consumers will have to shell out extra money making a deeper hole in their pockets.

The Orissa Electricity Regulatory Commission (OERC) on Friday has decided to hike the power tariff in the State.

As per the revision, the tariff for the first 50 units will be Rs 1. 40 paise per unit, the next 150 units will be charged at Rs 3.50 paise per unit. The tariff rate from 200- 400 units will be Rs. 4.30 paise, whereas those who use above 400 units would be a paying a whopping Rs. 4.80 paisa per unit.

However, the tariff for irrigation, agriculture and allied activities, agro based industries and BPL families upto 30 units remains unchanged.

The commission said rapid increase in the number of the electric consumers, increase in the consumption of power are some of the major reasons for this hike.
