Cuttack: Hunger can drive a person to go to any extent. Unable to feed the dependents, a woman has allegedly sold her 6-month-old son here at Teli Sahi under Ranihat area.

The destitute woman identified as Padma Behera sold her son to another woman of Behera Sahi of Chatra Bazar here for Rs 7, 000.

The woman deserted by her husband was forced to trade the child in lieu of money as she was unable to meet the ends. Padma is a mother of three.

“I sold the child for money to support my family,” Padma Behera said.

“She sold the child in my absence when I had been to Gopalpur. When I came to know of the incident, I asked her to leave,” Padma’s father Niranjan Das said.

The buyer identified as Gurubari Behera came forward to espouse the child as her three children died earlier. The childless woman is also being dumped by her husband who has relocated to neighbouring Andhra Pradesh.

“She already had two children and was dumped by her husband. So she was willing to sell her child for money to support her family,” Gurubari Behera said.

The desolate woman was looking forward to adopt a child and poverty-stricken Padma was willing to spare a child. Thus, a deal was struck between the two ladies.

“Abject poverty drove Padma to sell her child,” local resident Rameswar Behera said.

Though initially Padma refused to accept the fact that she sold her child to some other person, later she admitted to the fact. However, the duo was unaware of legal intricacies that selling and buying child is illegal.
