Potato, onion traders asked to keep profits low

Bhubaneswar: Odisha government on Monday asked traders to sell potatoes and onions at higher rates of Rs 2.50-3.00 and Rs 3.50-4.00 per kg, respectively, to retail consumers in comparison to wholesalers. This was announced by Madhusudan Padhi, secretary of Food Supplies department here.

The department will inform about the wholesale rates of potatoes and onions through advertisements, Padhi added.

Currently, at the wholesale counters potatoes are being sold Rs 1400-1450 per quintal whereas onions are available Rs 2200-2400 per quintal. Similarly, in retail markets potatoes and onions are being sold at Rs 22 and Rs 30 per kg, respectively.

Besides, the government has decided to stop collecting taxes on vehicles carrying vegetables and fruits at RMC gates, Padhi added.
