Bhubaneswar: About 400 grams of gold worth over Rs 20 lakh was seized from a passenger at Biju Patnaik International Airport (BPIA) here on Friday.
The gold was seized from a passenger identified as A Jainulabdeen, who was travelling to Chennai by flight No. 6E 209 at 3.33 pm today.
As per sources, the passenger approached frisking booth No. 3 manned by personnel H S Prasad. As the indication of Door Frame Metal Detectors (DFMD) was showing high density in the man's lower torso, the checking officer again frisked the passenger with Hand Held Metal Detector (HHMD) and confirmed that he was hiding something inside.
The passenger was interrogated by the officials following which he confessed of carrying gold inside his rectum. Later, four pieces of rectangle shape yellow metal wrapped and concealed inside his body cavity were recovered. The approximate cost of the gold is Rs 20,14,000, said sources.
The passenger was deboarded and handed over to Custom officials for further necessary action.
In January this year, the officials of Air Intelligence and Customs had seized gold estimated to be worth Rs 8.91 lakh from a passenger at the BPIA.
According to reports, the gold was recovered from an Indian origin passenger from Madurai who had arrived at BPIA in AirAsia flight from Kuala Lumpur on January 17.
The passenger had concealed the gold inside his luggage and hand bag. Around 48 pieces of gold of foreign origin were recovered from the passenger’s luggage.
