Burla: Students of Veer Surendra Sai Institute of Medical Sciences and Research (VIMSAR) on Saturday locked the main gate of the medical college and staged a demonstration against the absorption of students of Jaring-based Sardar Rajas Medical College.

The protest caused trouble for students of Sardar Rajas College who were asked to report to VIMSAR after taking admission at DMET.

Even some students of Sardar Rajas College and parents met the Sambalpur Collector and apprise him about the trouble.

Notably, as per the High Court order, 54 students of Sardar Rajas Medical College have been absorbed in VIMSAR.

“Though the High Court knew it is a sensitive issue, no order was passed regarding this. As a result students of two colleges will have a face-off today. To avoid any unpleasant situation, we locked the gate of the college,” a protesting student of VIMSAR said.

A student of Sardar Rajas Medical College, who had come for reporting, asked, “When the matter was pending before the High Court, where were these protesting students?”

Asked about the incident, Sambalpur collector Balwant Singh said, “Steps will be taken on Monday as per the law.”

It may be recalled that the High Court had asked the State government to absorb the medicos of Sardar Rajas in government-run and private institutions. Though the students of VIMSAR and MKCG, who were opposing the admission of Sardar Rajas students in government institutions citing lack of infrastructure and faculty, filed a Misc case in the High Court to put a stay on its previous order, it was rejected by the court.

Later, challenging the High Court order, the agitating students had moved the Supreme Court seeking an interim order in the matter. However, the apex court rejected the appeal and upheld the High Court order.
