Konark: Honey bees swarmed the Konark Sun Temple premises again today leaving the tourists terrorized. According to sources, scared tourists have vacated the temple after few tourists were stung by the bees.
At least 15 tourists, including four foreigners, were injured after being stung by a swarm of honey bees at the Konark Sun Temple premises in Odisha on Tuesday, officials said.
This was the second consecutive day that the bees stung visitors to the world famous heritage site, around 65 km from state capital Bhubaneswar. On Monday too, honey bees attacked tourists to the temple.
According to sources, the scared tourists vacated the temple premises after the 15 visitors, including four foreigners and two tourists from Chhattisgarh, were injured.
Four foreigners and two tourists from Chhattisgarh have reportedly been injured in the bee attack. As per latest reports as many as 15 tourists have undergone medical treatment after the attack.
Earlier yesterday, a flock of honey bees also swarmed the temple resulting in chaos among the tourists. Notably, the bees came from a beehive within the premises of the temple which has reportedly been destroyed by monkeys.
“We are trying to take steps to remove the bee hives from the temple premises as this is the only option now which will help us to prevent such mishap,” said Jiban Kumar Pattnaik, superintendent of Odisha branch of Archaeological Survey of India (ASI).
Notably, the temple authorities had informed the ASI about the presence of beehives in the premises and also apprised them of a similar incident in the past. However, no action was taken. This time, the ASI officials were themselves present when the bees attacked the visitors.
The sale of tickets was put on hold temporarily.
