Sukinda: Tata Steel Tribal Cultural Society (TSTCS) today awarded Jyoti Fellowship for the year 2016 to 228 underprivileged SC/ST students from 12 schools and eight colleges from Jajpur and Dhenkanal districts at Kate Purty auditorium of Sukinda Chromite Mine here.
A total of 134 boys and 94 girls from Standard VIII to Undergraduate level were awarded by Sukinda MLA Preetiranjan Ghadai, in presence of Bhagbati Mahanta, Block chairperson, Bidyadhar Patra, Zila Parishad member, Biren Bhuta, chief, CSR, Tata Steel, Rajesh Patel, chief, SCM, Amibka Nanda, head, CSR, Tata Steel, Odisha, Gourang Das, general secretary, SCM workers’ Union and SN Pandey, president of the Union, local PRI members and other dignitaries.
An amount of Rs 12,28,000 was awarded as scholarship to the students. Besides, 36 students of Standard VIII were awarded wrist watches, four toppers of Standard VIII and one topper of Undergraduate level were given Tablets. Each student was also given a fruit bearing sapling.
Commending the initiative of Tata Steel, Ghadai hoped that this fellowship will help the students to pursue higher education.
Speaking on the occasion, Biren Bhuta said Tata Steel will continue to take similar measures to ensure a better educated and more inclusive society and urged the students to dream big.
TSTCS has been supporting SC/ST students from standard VII and above and gives them an opportunity to pursue higher education in technical and vocational courses.
This is the fifth year that Jyoti Fellowship was awarded at Sukinda. Till now, 924 students have been benefited from this initiative of Tata Steel.
