Koraput: BJD leader and chairman of Koraput Municipality Biswabhusan Patnaik resigned from his post on Monday after being accused of misbehaving a lady councillor.
Patnaik submitted his resignation letter to the Additional District Magistrate (ADM) in the presence of District BJD president.
Patnaik has also sent his resignation letter to his party supremo and chief minister Naveen Patnaik.
“I decided to resign from the post of chairman for the sake of the reputation of my party following an allegation of misbehaviour brought against me by a lady councillor of ward no-13,” Patnaik told media persons here.
He, however, cliamed that the allegation brought against him by the lady councillor was false and demanded a probe into it to ascertain the truth.
Ishwar Chandra Panigrahi, state general secretary of Biju Yuva Janata Dal, said his party, at a meeting here on Sunday, had taken a decision to ask the chairman to resign from his postto pave the way for an impartial probe into the allegation levelled against him by the lady councillor.
“We will have another meeting after the investigation is completed and take a decision as per the directive of the party high command,” Panigrahi informed.
Meanwhile, the District Congress Committee (DCC), which had called for a bandh in Koraput town on Monday to protest police inaction in arresting Koraput municipality chairman, withdrew its decision after his resignation.
The DCC president Meenakshi and Koraput legislator Krushna Chandra Sagaria had alleged that police are deliberately not acting in the case despite an FIR being filed as the accused belongs to the ruling party.
