Cuttack: The opposition Congress today came down heavily on the BJD government in Odisha for failing to contain the spread of jaundice in Cuttack city.

With four fresh cases of jaundice detected on the day, the Odisha Pradesh Congress Committee (PCC) chief Prasad Harichandan along with several local party leaders visited the affected areas.

"This government has failed to provide even clean drinking water to people of Cuttack. The jaundice menace could have been checked much earlier had the state and local administration was alert to the situation," Harichandan said claiming that over hundred people are afflicted with this water-borne disease in a month.

The PCC chief was accompanied by party general secretary Suresh Chandra Mohapatra and Cuttack city party chief Md Moquim.

Taking stock of the situation in every affected locality, the OPCC chief held the state responsible for the outbreak in the city.

Visiting the affected areas, the local legislator Pravat Ranjan Biswal of BJD said as per the direction of the state, all illegal PHD water connections have been removed now and the old pipelines of water consumers are being replaced.

Since most of the pipelines are passing through drains, leakage in them is causing problem, he said.
