Rourkela: After long agitation workers of Orind, a defunct refractory unit at Lathikata, today received one month`s wages against their dues for 15 months. The District Labour Officer Umakanta Jena said the Orind management paid about Rs 50 lakh to 751 employees towards one month`s salary.

The management promised to continue payment of salary and other statutory dues though no time limit was given, Jena said. The management had been avoiding paying salaries on the ground that the factory was defunct. Several high-level meetings were held in the past two months and the state goernment directed the management to pay the salary dues for two months on November 14 and the dues of the remaining 13 months within next three months.

The management, however, failed to pay the two months salary due on November 14 and instead prayed for time to pay the salary dues from today. President of Lathikata Mazdoor Manch George Tirkey, who is spearheading an indefinite dharna before the gate of the factory, said it would continue till the salary dues for 15 months were paid and PF dues deposited with the PF commissioner beside payment of other statutory dues to retired and deceased employees.
