Rourkela: Hundreds of Orind Mill workers led by Orind Workers Majdoor Sangh today staged a road blockade at Lathikata on NH 23 to protest non-payment of salaries for 14 months and have threatened not to lift the blockade till their demands were fulfilled by the company management. Opposition MLA George Tirkey joined the workers in their protest.

The mill workers in the past too had resorted to agitations and demonstrations to press their demands. The workers complained that while the company has not paid their dues for the last 14 months, the management too has not deposited money under the provident fund scheme.

The government had constituted a high-level committee comprising the company management, district administration, and higher officials of the industry department to sort out the dispute. Though the committee held a meeting last week at the state secretariat the dispute remained unresolved.

The agitating workers demanded that the company management must give in writing the assurances made by it. Thousands of family members of the worker, including women and children, took to the streets. Heavy police band bust was made to avoid any untoward incident.
