Bhubanswar: As a prelude to the monsoon woes, the incessant rain over the past four days has posed a threat to the survival of the crops as rain waters have spread over the fields creating havoc among people.

The low pressure area that had formed over the Bay of Bengal has concentrated into a depression triggering heavy rains across the state since a few days.

The incessant and heavy rains since last four days have ruined hundreds of acres of standing paddy crops as they are submerged in water. And because of rough weather, the seas have turned turbulent and have swelled into the human habitat.

Adding to the misery of the farmers, the paddy crops have germinated which has put the farmers in despair. In many parts of Kendrapara district, especially in the areas like Aul, Pattamundai and Rajnagar, the situation has been very grim.

“This year I had cultivated in two acres of land and hoped to reap a good harvest so that I could repay the loans. But now it is all wasted, as most of the paddy are lying under water and have germinated,” said a distressed farmer.

Similarly, nature has played havoc at Aryapalli village of Ganjam district, where it has posed a threat to the lives of the villagers. With the erosion of the coastline, the sea water has transgressed into the human habitat. The villagers have suffered huge loss as their belongings and fishing nets have been washed away in the high tide.

“The heavy rains have created a lot of trouble as people here are not being able to go for fishing and are struggling hard to cope with the situation,” said a farmer.

“We are aware of peoples’ nightmares and are planning to bring in experts to assess the situation and based on their reports we will take steps to deal with the problem,” said Kisan Kumar, Collector, Ganjam.

And in urban pockets of Cuttack and Bhubaneswar, the water logging has given sleepless nights to the residents especially living in low lying areas. The clogging of drains has diverted the sewage water into the households. Since the Met Department has predicted more rains in nest 24 hours, people are living in utter fear of facing the worst.

Though the depression over North-East Bay of Bengal centred about 210 km East of Balasore has lost its intensity by now, it would still influence heavy rains in the northen Odisha,  according to the Met Department reports.
