Kendrapara: A teenage girl drowned and two others went missing after being swept away by the Brahmani river in Kendrapara district, police said. The girls were taking a bath to beat the heat when the mishap occured near Amrutamanehi village about 25 Km from here today.

The victims, all from dalit community, were students of a government-aided high school in the village. As the girls raised an alarm, a group of fishermen rushed to their rescue. One girl was saved and the body of another fished out from the Brahmani River while fire brigade personnel were pressed into service to trace the two other missing girls.

"We were taking a dip in the river near the ghat where the water level usually remains shallow. Suddenly, one of us slipped and washed away. We tried to save her. In the process, we were stuck in the strong current of river water", said Pinky Sethy (13), a survivor.
