Cuttack: A woman was allegedly killed by her brother-in-law at Uparsahi in Sikharpur area of Cuttack early on Friday morning. The brother of the deceased woman claimed that the murder is the fallout of a property dispute.
The Chauliaganj Police which rushed to the spot after receiving the information has detained the man for interrogation.
According to reports, the woman belonged to Athagarh area and was living in Cuttack after marriage. Her husband had died few years back due to jaundice.
The family members of the deceased woman alleged that she (victim) had a fight with her brother-in-law on Thursday night over an unknown issue. Following this, her brother-in-law allegedly locked her in the kitchen this morning and beat her to death.
The entire incident took place in the presence of the 10-year-old daughter of the accused.
"Her (deceased) niece informed us about the incident over phone. He had earlier attacked my sister over property dispute. I had told her to file an FIR against him at police station then. But as the matter was settled following discussion, she did not file any complaint," alleged the brother of the deceased, Ajit Bhuyan.
"The deceased's 10-year-old niece called us over phone at around 7.40 am and informed that her father hit her aunt. She told us that she was unconscious and asked us to immediately come following which we rushed to Cuttack. He killed her over property," alleged Subhrashmi Bhuyan, a family member of the woman.
Chauliaganj Police rushed to the spot after receiving the information from the woman's family and started an investigation. The police have taken the minor girl who is the sole eye witness in the incident for recording statement and detained the accused for questioning.
A forensic team has also been summoned for conducting scientific investigation into the case.
"The woman's brother-in-law surrendered before the police after murdering her. As per preliminary investigation, the murder is the fallout of a land dispute. A forensic team has reached the spot and police have also started investigation into the case," informed Cuttack DCP Prateek Singh.
