Balasore: In yet another allege attempt to encroach upon Odisha’s territory, authorities in neighbouring West Bengal cut down several trees, razed agricultural crops and betel vines at Sahabajipur village located near the Odisha-West Bengal border in Balasore district.
The action by the Digha-Shankarpur Development Authority accompanied by earth movers (JCB machines) is threatening to rob the livelihood of people at this border village. People in the village which has been part of
Odisha’s territory since ages, have sought immediate intervention of the State government for immediate action against such arbitrary action of the neighbouring state.
“West Bengal officials came with their machines and destroyed our crops,” alleged Kalpana Samal, a villager.
The West Bengal administration called off its drive following a massive protest by the villagers. The action by the neighbouring State forced Bhogari MLA, Ananta Das to undertake a spot visit to assess the situation.
The legislator informed that the situation arose as there are no milestones demarcating territory. Till such a provision is made after proper survey, Odisha Police personnel have been asked to keep a close watch on the situation, Das added.
“We urge both Odisha and West Bengal governments to resolve the border issue amicably,” said Sushant Pradhan, another villager.
Arun Giri, representative of the Sarpanch said that officials from West Bengal came and destroyed the houses and standing crops around three days back.
The Tehsildar, on the other hand claimed that the district Collector would hold talks with the administrative officials of West Bengal, if needed.
As per reports, nearly 82 villages under Jaleswar and Bhogarai blocks in Balasore district are now entangled in a border dispute with West Bengal.
