Bhubaneswar: The India Meteorological Department (IMD)'s Regional Centre here on Saturday issued yellow warning for several districts forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall from September 1.
“Yellow warning has been issued for eight districts- Keonjhar, Mayurbhanj, Kendrapara, Jajpur, Bhadrak, Jagatsinghpur, Sundergarh and Gajapati. These districts are likely to experience heavy to very heavy rainfall from September 1,” Madan Mohan Das, duty officer at the weather office said.
Yesterday’s well-marked low pressure area over south west Jharkhand and neighbourhood now lies over north Chhattisgarh and adjoining East Madhya Pradesh. Under its influence, several parts in north interior Odisha are likely to record light to moderate rain,” Das informed.
Asked about effects of rain on the flood situation, the weatherman said, “Other than Balasore and Bhadrak, the rain will not have any serious impact on the present flood-like condition in the State.”
Meanwhile, flood threats looms large over all these districts following the release of excess water from Hirakud dam due to incessant rainfall in the upper catchment areas. Keeping this in view, Odisha government on Saturday deputed senior bureaucrats to oversee flood management in several vulnerable districts of the State.
Odisha has reported 838.2 mm rainfall from June 1 to August 25, which is three percent less than the normal. Malkangiri reported the highest 1439.8 mm rain followed by Deogarh (1128.9 mm), Sambalpur (973.9 mm), Koraput (953.6) and Dhenkanal (949.1 mm).
