Puri: Close on the heels of the sensational death of one K Ramesh due to alleged police excess in the custody in November last year, an Under Trial Prisoner (UTP) lodged in district jail died under mysterious circumstances at hospital on Sunday.
Jail sources said that the deceased identified as Sridhar Das fell ill on Saturday following which he was admitted to district headquarters hospital. However, he was declared dead while undergoing treatment.
Meanwhile, wife of the deceased, Sabita Das has alleged foul play behind the death of her husband. She suspected that her husband has been killed in the jail. She has also lodged a complaint at Ramachandi police station in this connection.
Sources said Sridhar was arrested on charges of domestic dispute.
Puri Superintendent of Police (SP) KB Singh has assured investigation into the death of Sridhar as per guidelines of National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
It is worth mentioning that K Ramesh from Baseli Sahi in Puri had died due to alleged police excess in November last year. The death of Ramesh had sparked a political furore in the State with BJP and Congress stalling the winter session of the Odisha Assembly multiple times.
Following the incident, the State government transferred the then Superintendent of Police (SP) Akhileswar Singh as an immediate measure and also effected suspensions of some other cops.
