Bhubaneswar: The State government has urged the Centre to upgrade Veer Surendra Sai University of Technology (VSSUT), Burla, as an Indian Institute of Engineering, Science and Technology (IIEST) through an Act in the Parliament.

In a letter to the Ministry of Human Resource Development (MHRD) secretary Satyanarayan Mohanty, the State’s chief secretary G.C. Pati has sought development of the VSSUT while requesting for a national tag to the Burla-based university on the basis of recommendations from Anand Krishnan Committee formed in 2007.

The VSSUT was given unitary university status in 2009 and has 11 degree courses, 18 MTech, three MSc and two integrated MSc, three MPhil, one MCA and 12 PhD programmes. Earlier the VSSUT was a technical institute, which was founded in 1956.
