Bhubaneswar: The State Transport department has decided to intensify its drive once again to enforce the amended Motor Vehicle Act strictly from January.
Commerce and Transport Minister Padmanabha Behera on Sunday said the transport officials and police have been instructed to step up the vehicle checking from next year.
"Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the checking of vehicles slowed down everywhere. Now, the Supreme Court Committee has pulled up all the States for not enforcing the amended MV Act strictly. So, a meeting presided over the Chief Secretary has recently decided to enforce the law strictly from January", Behera said.
The officials have been asked to check drunken driving, over-speeding, red light jumping, driving against flow of traffic, using mobile phone while driving, triple riding on two-wheeler, use of helmet and seat belt and adopt a zero telerance approach for violation of the traffic norms.
The State Transport Authority has said that the Driving Licences will be suspended for three months for violation of any of the norms especially driving without helmet, drunken driving and use of mobile phones while driving.
" As per the directions of the Supreme Court Committee on Road Safety, DL will be suspended for three months for driving above speed limit, red light jumping, drunken driving, using mobile phone while driving, carrying passengers in goods vehicle, not wearing helmet on two wheeler," it tweeted.
The tweet further stated "The DL is suspended for not wearing helmet under section 194D of MV Act. The Supreme Court Committee on road safety has directed to strictly enforce helmet law as it will reduce the death due to road accidents by 41%."
